It’s My Birthday: Surf and Turf!

September 8, 2013 by susanelester 10 Comments

My birthday dinner in the garden!  Yes, that’s a St. Germain Cocktail!

I have to admit it, when it comes to my birthday, I’m spoiled!  My mom hosted a joint birthday dinner for my step-father and me.  She made me a white cake with strawberries & whipped cream – one of my favorites! She also spoiled my step father though, by going out of her way to get one of these best tech gadgets for men – he loves all of that kind of stuff, so I know that he was really happy with his present. Me on the other hand, I was just happy with the food. My husband invited my dad and his wife, my brother and his wife, and our niece and her boyfriend over for a wonderful Cajun dinner party – and my niece made a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting, strawberries, and blueberries (post to follow).  On my actual birthday, John took me to Griffith Observatory then to dinner at Holdren’s in Newbury Park.  Last night, he made this wonderful dinner for me.  Then, tonight, he took me to dinner at Saddle Peak Lodge in Malibu Canyon, where I actually ate Elk Tenderloin for dinner!

Surf & Turf on the Grill

For Lobster
Preheat grill to medium.
Cut 2 Lobster Tails in half .
Brush the exposed flesh with melted Butter and sprinkle with Sunny Spain Seasoning.
Place on grill, flesh-side down for 5 minutes.
Turn over, and cook on shell side for another 3 – 5 minutes, basting continuously with melted butter, until flesh is opaque.
Remove from grill and spritz with fresh Lemon.

A birthday-worthy meal!

For Filet Mignon
Sprinkle with Salt, Pepper, and Garlic Powder.
Brush grill with Olive Oil.
Cook steaks for 5 – 8 minutes a side depending upon your preference.
Remove from grill and top with Garlic-herb Butter (you can make your own, but we purchased one from Trader Joe’s).

Steamed Broccoli

Remove the stems from a head of Broccoli and place in a saucepan with about 2 inches of water.
Sprinkle with Salt & Pepper.
Steam over medium-high heat for about 8 minutes.
Strain and top with Butter.

Scalloped Potatoes (Secret Family Recipe)

We don’t use very many pre-packaged foods, but the Betty Crocker Scalloped Potatoes are so good that we call them our “Secret Family Recipe!”  They turn out perfectly every time.

Chocolate Fruit Basket Cake
For dessert, John got me this gorgeous cake from the Bread Basket which is where we ordered our wedding cake!  They have beautiful berries year-round and their cakes are amazing!
