As soon as I saw Jennifer’s post for this gorgeous Chocolate Espresso Layer Cake, I planned to make if for my sister-in-law’s birthday! Everything about this cake is perfect. I have to confess to being a tea drinker. The only coffee-flavored anything I usually like is Kahlua! But this was not about me, it was about making the perfect birthday cake for someone else. But, you know what? I ended up loving this cake!
Like that soft dreamy lighting you see in portraits of movie stars, the coffee played the chocolate up to its best advantage. I am a novice when it comes to piping frosting and I had a vision of ombre roses adorning this cake. Suffice it to say, that after a few practice roses, I realized this brilliant idea exceeded my skill-level. Instead, I piped monochrome roses all over the top of the cake. In my (humble) opinion, this rendered a cake worthy of a bridal shower.
The best kept secret of all is how totally easy this cake is to make! The flavor, texture, and icing came together to create a beautiful cake and make my sister-in-law feel super special!

I do not know what ombre roses are, Susan, but I think those monochrome roses look as if they require a pretty high skill-level — which you always seem to possess in amazing ways. Very nice job for the birthday girl.
